Description

1901 Ten Dollar, PR65+ Cameo
Rarely Offered in Any Grade

1901 $10 PR65+ Cameo NGC. The type-coin appeal of this 20th century proof ten is obvious, although acquiring an example will prove challenging. The 1901 proof Liberty eagle had a small mintage of 85 pieces, of which 50 to 65 examples are believed to survive, including two in the Smithsonian Institution. The certified population is highly inflated, as NGC and PCGS combined list 88 coins -- more than were reportedly struck. Our Permanent Auction Archives show mainly multiple appearances of a few impaired examples, with high-grade pieces being scarce. The last Gem Cameo we offered was an NGC coin in lot 5062 of our October 2011 Pittsburgh Signature sale, which realized nearly $36,000. The present Plus-graded example is superior in quality and eye appeal, show a depth of mirroring and contrast that borders an Ultra Cameo grade. The strike is full, and the fields are delightfully free of bothersome hairlines. Census: 3 in 65 Cameo, 6 finer (8/16).
