1901 $10 PR66 Cameo NGC. The mintage for proof 1901 tens was only 85 pieces, and there is no reason to doubt the accuracy of the Mint records. The general rule-of-thumb for 19th and early 20th century proof gold is a 50-60% survival rate. That would put the number of survivors for the 1901 proof ten around 45-50 coins. (In his 1988 reference, Breen estimated 30-40 pieces.) If one looks at population data, however, there have been a total of 93 proofs certified by both of the major services, more than the original mintage and a total that underscores the fallibility of population data. The reason is easy to see when the value of each grade is examined. From PR64 Cameo to PR65 Cameo the price roughly doubles. The result is a huge bulge of resubmissions in NGC coins with 31 submission events!
The 1901 ten was the last year a cameo finish is relatively easy to find. The following year the Mint went to an all-brilliant finish for proofing and cameo contrast is very rare on coins from 1902 onward. This is a starkly contrasted proof. The fields are "black" with noticeably contrasting mint frost over the devices, and the coin is well-balanced in appearance on each side. Heavy die polish is evident when the coin is closely examined. Polish has created a shiny spot below Liberty's ear, the hair curls behind the head are detached, and several feathers are missing or diminished in detail around the fletchings of the upper arrow. Predictably, the fields show die striations. The only mentionable identifier is a tiny horseshoe-shaped lint mark just to the right of the eagle's neck. Exceptional overall quality.
