    Description

    1902 Eagle, PR64
Start of the 'No Contrast' Coinage

1902 $10 PR64 PCGS. The reported proof mintage for the 1902 eagle was a bit high in relation to its bookends, 113 coins compared to 85 and 96 for the 1901 and 1903, respectively. Notwithstanding, today the issue is elusive in any grade. Were many of these low-contrast proofs later spent? This was the year that the Mint inexplicably changed its method of proof manufacture to one of little to no contrast (the chance depending on die states at the time each proof was struck). This deep orange-gold piece is highly reflective throughout each side, but there is just a trace of contrast. A small tick under Liberty's hairbun and a few scattered, minuscule smaller marks determine the grade. The proof strike is razor-sharp, as expected. A nice type coin for the grade. Population: 20 in 64 (1 in 64+), 6 finer (10/13).(Registry values: N1) (NGC ID# 28G9, PCGS# 8842)

    Weight: 16.72 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
