Description

Gem Proof 1903 Liberty Ten Dollar

1903 PR 65 NGC. Ex: Trompeter. The 1903 is very scarce when judged in the context of post-1900 proof eagles. It is more difficult than the 1900, 1902, and 1904. Akers estimates that no more than 25-30 specimens exist today, while Breen has a more liberal estimation of 35-40 proofs. We tend to agree with Akers' numbers as this is only the third proof example of this date we have handled in the past five years. This is a textbook example of the "all-brilliant, no-contrast" method of proofing adopted in the Mint after 1900. There is no contrast between the fields and devices, and the raised portions of the design have as much die polish and brilliance as do the recesses. For pedigree purposes, a tiny diagonal scratch is noted on Liberty's shoulder above the 03 of the date. This is the second finest example thus far certified by NGC (11/98). (NGC ID# 28GA, PCGS# 8843)
