Description

Unusual Gem Cameo Proof 1906 Eagle

1906 $10 PR65 Cameo NGC. CAC. The present piece is unusual -- besides its status as a proof Liberty Head gold coin -- as a Cameo example produced during the Mint's post-1901 "semibrilliant" era, to use the Breen term. Proof gold (and proofs in general) were no longer intentionally made with strong field-device contrast. This Gem Cameo 1906 eagle displays yellow-gold coloration on each side, with contrast that is perceptible even if insufficient to attain an Ultra Cameo designation. The fields are profoundly mirrored, with moderate mint frost coating the devices. A tiny planchet mark on the cheek provides a pedigree marker. Census: 3 in 65 Cameo, 5 finer (12/11).(Registry values: P1)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 28GD, PCGS# 88846, Greysheet# 9736)

Weight: 16.72 grams

Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
