Description

1906 Ten Dollar, PR65
A Rare Proof Date in All Grades

1906 $10 PR65 NGC. Proof Liberty eagle production in the early 20th century was generally higher than it had been in the 1880s and 1890s, but it began to fall off again in the last two years of the Liberty Head series. In 1906, only 77 proofs were struck, and many left the mint without any significant amount of cameo contrast due to the die polishing methods used for proof dies of the period. Perhaps 40 to 60 pieces survive in all grades, and these are rarely offered at auction. In the early 1980s, David Akers believed that only 25 to 30 proofs were known. Since 1993, we have handled a 1906 proof ten on 29 occasions, which almost uniformly represented every grade from PR63 to PR67. Save for the lack of strong contrast on many examples, quality of strike and preservation is not an issue with this date, but its scarcity does pose a challenge for collectors. We are pleased to offer a lovely Gem here, which shows rich orange-gold color and deep mirroring in the fields. Subtle contrast is visible on the obverse, but the reverse does not warrant a Cameo designation. Census: 2 in 65, 0 finer; 3 in 65 (1 in 65+) Cameo, 9 finer; 0 in 65 Ultra Cameo, 3 finer (3/18).(Registry values: P1)
