Seldom-Seen Liberty Head Proof With Strong Contrast

1906 $10 PR67 Cameo NGC. Both the high technical grade and the Cameo designation make this coin a standout example of the 1906 eagle, certified PR67 Cameo by NGC. The 1907 Liberty Head eagle would be the last of the design, replaced later in the same year by the Indian Head design of Augustus Saint-Gaudens.
The 1906 and 1907 Liberty head tens were both struck in proof format, nominal amounts of 77 pieces for the 1906 and 74 for the 1907, and accordingly representing the last two proof issues of the design. These proof mintages are not significantly different from several earlier issues of the late 1890s-early 1900s. It is safe to say, however, that more of these proof issues were likely saved than the proofs from several decades earlier; ten dollars was a lot of money during the late 19th century, and the temptation was everpresent to spend such coins during hard times. Recent estimates put the number of survivors in all grades for the 1906 at about 35-40 pieces, perhaps half of the original mintage.
The present 1906 eagle is certified PR67 Cameo by NGC, making it one of only two such at that service with none finer in the Cameo class (11/12). We at Heritage have been privileged to offer examples of such superb quality less than once per year over the past few years. One example graded PR67 Cameo failed to meet its reserve in 2008, and a second coin in the same grade realized $60,375 in our Los Angeles Signature (Heritage, 7/2009), lot 1305. At its second appearance in our Fort Worth ANA Signature (Heritage, 3/2010), lot 2518, the piece realized $63,250. A PR66 Ultra Cameo NGC example also brought $63,250, the latter in our Phoenix ANA Signature from a year earlier (Heritage, 3/2008), lot 1598.
The viewer of this coin will require no effort to discern the perceptible gold-on-black cameo contrast, despite the issue's production during the Mint's so-called "semibrilliant" proof coinage era, post-1902. The strike is impeccable over both sides. A few wispy field hairlines are of little import, and the prevailing color is a beautiful medium yellow-gold. Census: 2 in 67, 0 finer (11/12).
