Description

1888 Ten Dollar, PR64 Cameo
Rare in all Proof Formats
Seldom Offered

1888 $10 JD-1, R.6, PR64 Cameo PCGS. John Dannreuther concludes 75 1888 proofs were struck , while the Mint's die use and destruction document reports only 72 proofs struck. In any case, the Dannreuther estimate of 18 to 22 surviving proofs seems accurate based on research that shows only about 33% at most of the proofs struck in the 1880s survive. Many proofs were simply spent by dealers and the public alike during those times. Fortunately, this near-Gem Cameo proof was well-preserved and is one of only three PR64 Cameos certified by PCGS, including two in 64+. Sparkling orange-golf surfaces display smooth, mirrorlike fields set against well-frosted central motifs. The proof strike is suitably sharp and only a few wayward, tiny marks and faint hairlines exist on either side. The 1888 eagle proofs are seldom seen at auction in any grade, and a Choice Cameo example such as this one of the few we have offered in some 25 years of our auction archives. PCGS Population: 3 in 64 Cameo, including 2 in 64+ (4/26).
