Description

1863 Liberty Half Eagle, PR65 Cameo
Only 30 Examples Struck
Ex: Carter-Trompeter

1863 $5 PR65 Cameo NGC. Ex: Trompeter. Only 30 proof Liberty half eagles were struck in 1864, all for inclusion in the gold proof sets, which were delivered on March 23. In lot 323 of the catalog of the David S. Wilson Collection (S.H. Chapman, 3/1907), the cataloger noted:

"1863 $20, $10, $5, $3, $2 1/2, $1. The quarter eagle is extremely rare, only 30 proofs struck at the Philadelphia Mint; and the late J.F. McCoy, one of the largest collectors of the time, stated to me that 'he knew only thirty pieces were struck, and of these some were remelted at the Mint.' $3 and $1 very rare. Complete set. 3 pcs."

No business-strike quarter eagles were struck in 1863, putting incredible pressure on the tiny supply of proofs to satisfy collector demand. The rare quarter eagles were widely sought-after from the date of issue, and some of their luster has transferred to the other gold denominations of the date. Probably no more than 10-12 examples of the five dollar issue survive today in all grades, and three of those are impounded in institutional collections at the Smithsonian Institution and the American Numismatic Society. Needless to say, proof gold specialists prize the rare 1863 proof half eagles over most other dates of that era.

The present coin is an impressive Gem, with razor-sharp definition on all design elements. The deeply mirrored fields set off the frosty devices in a delightful black-on-gold cameo effect when the coin is tilted in the light. The yellow-gold surfaces are impeccably preserved with a tiny planchet flaw near star 9 the only significant pedigree marker. Eye appeal is outstanding and the illustrious pedigree adds to the intense historic interest of this piece. Census: 2 in 65 Cameo, 0 finer (4/15).
