Cameo Proof 1864 No Motto Half Eagle

1864 $5 PR63 Cameo NGC. Despite myriad abrasions in the fields, this is a dynamic proof with excellent contrast and sharp design features. Both sides are bright yellow with fully lustrous devices and excellent contrast. Faint blue-gray color appears in a thin band across the left side of the reverse, representing an imperfect alloy mix. Just 50 proofs were made, all on February 11 of that year. In addition to the limited quantity of proofs, a meager business strike mintage totaled just 4,170 coins. In his Proof Encyclopedia, Breen identified 12 examples, but suggested that some duplication may exist. Possibly as many as 20 proofs of this date survive, although the actual number may be smaller.
