Extremely Scarce 1865 Half Eagle PR64 Deep Cameo
1865 $5 PR64 Deep Cameo PCGS. Production of 1865 proof half eagles dropped from an average of more than 50 pieces over the preceding six years to a miniscule 25 pieces in 1865. Of that already tiny number, only 12-14 specimens are believed to survive. Over the past decade, the most noteworthy example to appear on the market was the PCGS PR66 from the Harry W. Bass Collection which was sold in November, 2000 for $66,700. The demand for proofs from this year is further enhanced by the difficulty of 1865 business strikes, of which a mere 1,270 pieces were produced. The desirable proof 1865 five dollar offered here is a dramatically-contrasted specimen whose fields offer illimitable depth of mirrored reflectivity that provide stark contrast against the needle sharp devices. Both sides are coated in a beautiful orange-gold patina that in no way undermines the strong reflective qualities. Close inspection of the obverse reveals a long, paper-thin facial blemish that curves down from Liberty's nose to her jawline. A couple of glancing disturbances are found on the reverse. One is noted in the field above the eagle's head and the second is an almost imperceptible pinscratch that begins beneath the first T in STATES and continues to the juncture of the eagle's left (facing) wing. A significant find for the specialist in early proof gold. Population: 3 in 64 Deep Cameo, 0 finer (12/06).(Registry values: P4) (PCGS# 98455)
Weight: 8.36 grams
