Description

1866 Liberty Half Eagle, PR64 Ultra Cameo
    30 Pieces Struck, Ex: Trompeter

1866 $5 PR64 Ultra Cameo NGC. CAC. Ex: Trompeter. The design of the half eagle was changed in 1866 to include a scroll on the reverse featuring the motto IN GOD WE TRUST, an important consideration for type purposes. The proof mintage was increased slightly, to 30 pieces, but the 1866 proofs remain almost as rare as the No Motto issues of previous years. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth estimate a surviving population of just 10-12 examples in all grades, with two of those coins in institutional collections and unavailable to collectors.

The present coin was once included in the collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. It was deaccessioned and sold in the 1976 ANA Convention Auction by Stack's and acquired by legendary proof gold collector Ed Trompeter. The design elements exhibit pinpoint definition throughout and the devices have a frosty texture that contrasts profoundly with the deeply mirrored fields. This coin has a pronounced wire rim. The rich yellow-gold surfaces show a few minor hairlines that do little to detract from the outstanding eye appeal. Census: 1 in 64 Ultra Cameo, 2 finer (4/15).
Ex: Boston Museum of Fine Arts; ANA Convention Auction (Stack's, 8/1976), lot 2990; Ed Trompeter Collection; Heritage Auctions, circa 1998; private collection.
