Description

1867 Half Eagle, PR63 Cameo
Only Six NGC Certified Proofs

1867 $5 PR63 Cameo NGC. Just 50 proof half eagles were coined in 1867, along with only 6,870 business strikes. Survivors are rare in any grade, proof or Mint State. NGC has only certified six proofs in all grades, and only 58 business strikes. That small number of certified pieces provides a good indication of the 1867 half eagle rarity. The finest NGC submissions grade PR65 and MS61.
Light cameo contrast is evident on each side with moderately mirrored fields and lustrous devices, showing only a few minor contact marks on each side. The fields retain nearly full watery texture, characteristic of proofs from the middle and late 19th century.
NGC has only certified six proofs that are graded PR65 Ultra Cameo, PR64 Ultra Cameo (2), PR63 Cameo (this piece), PR63, and PR61 (6/12).(Registry values: P4)
