Description

Extremely Scarce 1867 PR64 Cameo Half Eagle

1867 $5 PR64 Cameo NGC. A glittering two-toned specimen from the second year in which With Motto Half Eagles were produced. The miniscule quantity of 50 proofs issued this year brought the total mintage to a similarly low 6,920 pieces, and high grade examples of either proofs or business strikes can be accurately described as extremely scarce. In reference to proofs, Breen estimates that only ten pieces still exist, while Akers believes that perhaps as many as twelve have survived in all grades. At least three of the survivors are badly impaired, and two are impounded in museums. Both sides exhibit deep, glassy reflectivity in the fields that stands out in sharp contrast to the devices. There is a hint of Mint caused roughness on Liberty's chin and a few wispy, well scattered hairlines in the fields, neither of which adversely affects the eye appeal of this elusive post Civil War proof.
