1867 Liberty Five, PR64 Ultra Cameo
Only One Finer Coin at NGC, Ex: Trompeter

1867 $5 PR64 Ultra Cameo NGC. Ex: Trompeter. The Philadelphia Mint delivered 25 gold proof sets on March 5, 1867 and another 25 sets on July 2. The total production figure of 50 sets is considerably larger than the totals for the few previous years, but the 1867 proof half eagle is not appreciably more available than other proofs of the mid-1860s. It is likely that the extra coins were never distributed and were destroyed after the end of the year. Experts estimate the surviving population at 10-15 examples in all grades, with a few in impaired condition, and two more in institutional collections.

The present coin is an attractive Choice example, with strongly impressed design elements and well-preserved yellow and greenish-gold surfaces. A few stars on the left are slightly attenuated, probably due to lapping. The richly frosted devices provide intense cameo contrast with the deeply reflective fields and eye appeal is terrific. Census: 2 in 64 Ultra Cameo, 1 finer (4/15).
