Description

1869 Liberty Five, PR63 Cameo
Classic 19th Century Rarity

1869 $5 PR63 Cameo NGC. The 1869 Liberty half eagle is one of the great rarities in the 19th century proof gold series. Only 25 examples were struck, and it is doubtful that more than 10-12 specimens have survived in all grades. This impressive Select example exhibits pinpoint definition throughout, with richly frosted devices that contrast boldly with the deeply mirrored fields. The surfaces are a vivid greenish-gold color and show some of the pebbled orange-peel texture associated with proof gold issues, but the effect is not pronounced. Absolute rarity and historic interest combine with intense aesthetic appeal to make this coin virtually irresistible. This is the first time Heritage has been privileged to offer an 1869 half eagle in PR63 Cameo, but the Choice Proof Cameo PCGS example in lot 3007 of the Long Beach Signature Auction (Heritage, 2/2006) realized $23,000. Census: 2 in 63 Cameo, 1 finer (9/11).(Registry values: P4)
