Description

    1869 Liberty Half Eagle, PR64
Only 25 Examples Struck, Ex: Bass

1869 $5 PR64 PCGS. Only 25 proof Liberty half eagles were struck in 1869 and far fewer collectible specimens survive today. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth estimate the surviving population at 10-12 examples in all grades. PCGS and NGC have combined to certify 14 coins between them, including two in impaired condition (10/17). The population data include an unknown number of resubmissions and crossovers. One coin is included in the National Numismatic Collection at the Smithsonian Institution and another is in the collection of the American Numismatic Society.

The present coin is an attractive Choice specimen, with sharply detailed design elements and deeply mirrored fields throughout. The vivid orange-gold surfaces show a slight scuff on Liberty's jaw and a few microscopic amber alloy spots on the obverse peripheries. Eye appeal is terrific.
Ex: Gaston DiBello Collection (Stack's, 5/1970), lot 926; Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection, Part IV (Bowers and Merena, 11/2000), lot 501.
