Gem Cameo Proof 1869 Half Eagle
Sole Cameo Example at PCGS

1869 $5 PR65 Cameo PCGS. CAC. From 1862 to 1882, mintages of proof gold coins, particularly proof half eagles, remained uniformly low. In no case did the stated mintage of any proof five dollar coin between those years exceed 50 pieces, and for many dates, the stated mintage is significantly lower. In the case of the 1869 half eagle, the official proof mintage is just 25 pieces, meaning that even if all coins were sold and survive today, the date would be very rare. Instead, perhaps half that number survive today, making the proof 1869 half eagle a borderline extreme rarity.
The 1869 half eagle has an additional quirk: PCGS is loath to credit the date as having Cameo-level contrast. This is the only Cameo representative of the date in the Population Report, compared to eight non-Cameo certification events, one of them impaired (2/12). NGC, by contrast, lists all its proof 1869 half eagles as Cameo, though out of five certification events only two, a PR65 and a PR65 ★ , achieve the same numeric grade. The CAC label on this coin's holder further sets it apart from the pack.
Lemon-yellow luster prevails at the margins of this specimen, while the interiors have a subtle orange cast. While the frost over the decisively struck devices is described best as "low-key," the fields around are amply mirrored with only a hint of texture. A greatly appealing representative of an issue that seldom comes up for auction.(Registry values: P4)
