Description

    Radiant Gem 1869 Half Eagle

1869 $5 PR65 PCGS. A beautiful orange-gold example of this formidable issue, well struck overall if not razor-sharp on the chin and eyebrow. Although this splendid Gem is not designated as Cameo by PCGS, it appears to fully merit the distinction, since the portrait and stars, as well as the eagle and reverse legends, all exhibit uninterrupted mint frost that pleasantly contrasts with the smooth fields. The 1869 is, of course, exceptionally rare in proof format, not that business strikes with their mintage of 1,760 pieces are common. Just 25 proofs were struck, and in its nearly twenty year history, PCGS has certified a total of 5 pieces, one of which is impaired and grades PR55. The present piece is the single finest certified by PCGS, and is more or less tied with the single highest graded (PR65 Cameo) among the four pieces encapsulated by NGC. Those few who have the courage to collect Liberty Half Eagle proofs know that many years may pass before a comparable 1869 specimen appears on the market, and the opportunity to obtain such a piece is fleeting.(#8464) (Registry values: P4) (NGC ID# 28C6, PCGS# 8464)
