Description

Very Rare 1872 Half Eagle--Only 30 Proofs Originally Produced

1872 PR 64 PCGS. Whether a business strike or a proof, the 1872 half eagle is a coin of extraordinary rarity. Only 1,660 business strikes were produced along with 30 proofs. Somewhere in the range of 12 to 15 proofs are believed to still exist today in all grades. Over the past six years we have only handled a single other specimen, that being a circulated PR 53 piece. This is one of the finest proofs known with only a couple of gems extant. The fields have an illimitible depth of mirrored reflectivity and go "black" against the golden mint frost on the devices. There are no singularly distracting blemishes, just a few scattered hairlines. What appears to be a spot on the back of the neck of Liberty is actually a tiny piece of debris trapped within the encasement.
