Seldom Offered 1875 Half Eagle, Proof Format

1875 $5 PR64 NGC. Continuing with the trend of the smaller gold denominations, the Philadelphia Mint produced few Half Eagles in 1875. The combined business strike and proof mintage is just 220 pieces, 20 of which are proofs. Survivors of the latter delivery number just 8-10 pieces, the present example being one of only three so graded by NGC and PCGS combined (5/01). This is a uniformly brilliant specimen with deep, rich, orange-gold color and no hairlines that would seem to preclude an even higher grade. The eagle's neck feathers and the highest curls over Liberty's forehead are a little softly defined from inadequate striking pressure, but the balance of the features are razor sharp. An appealing coin in all regards, and an obviously important coin for the gold date collector. We further note that fewer than five business strike 1875 Half Eagles are believed extant (per Breen, 1988), and this date ranks second in rarity among Liberty Fives after the 1854-S. Accompanied by PCGS insert 3682284, which also gives this coin a PR64 rating.
