    Description

Exceedingly Rare 1876 Five Dollar, Proof 65 Ultra Cameo

1876 $5 PR65 Ultra Cameo NGC. Heritage has the privilege to offer two of these ultrarare coins in the present auction. The year 1876 continued to be a low mintage one for half eagles as only 1,387 business strikes and 45 proofs were coined. Today, any 1876 five dollar is considered very rare. Most of the business strikes closely resemble proofs with mirrored fields and frosted devices, however, proofs are easily distinguished by the presence of a small die lump on Liberty's neck just below the jaw, vertically above the 1 in the date. Proofs were struck on two occasions in 1876: 20 pieces on February 19, and 25 pieces on June 13. All 45 coins used the same die pairing.
This is a fully brilliant, fully struck example. A few hairlines are detected in the fragile fields with light magnification, but there are no singularly mentionable marks or spots worthy of consideration as pedigree identifiers. In researching our archive files, we find this coin, and another in an equal grade offered here, to be the finest 1876 proof half eagles we have had the pleasure to offer in over 15 years. Population: 2 in 65 Ultra Cameo, none finer (10/05).(Registry values: P4) (NGC ID# 28CD, PCGS# 98471)

    Weight: 8.36 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
