    Description

Exceptional 1878 Proof Half Eagle, PR63, An Undesignated Cameo

1878 $5 PR63 PCGS. Only 20 pieces were struck of this issue and it is reliably estimated that today no more than 10 coins still exist as recognizable proofs. This is an exceptional specimen that will leave many scratching their heads wondering why it is "only" graded PR63 and why it is not designated as a cameo. The fields show exceptionally deep reflectivity and, in fact, go "black" when angled away from the viewer. The devices are covered with thick, golden mint frost and present a stark contrast against the depth of mirrors in the fields. There are no obvious contact marks on either side of this superlative proof Five. Population: 1 in 63, 3 finer (10/02).
From the Ashland City Collection. (NGC ID# 28CF, PCGS# 8473)

    Weight: 8.36 grams
