Description

1882 Liberty Half Eagle, PR64 Ultra Cameo
Classic Proof Gold Issue, Ex: Trompeter

1882 $5 PR64 Ultra Cameo NGC. CAC. The mintage of proof Liberty half eagles increased again in 1882, to 48 pieces. Forty examples were issued with the gold proof sets, with 25 sets delivered on February 4, and 15 more on August 12. The other eight coins were delivered in the first three quarters of the year, three before March 31, four in the second quarter, and one more before September 30. Probably fewer than 20 examples survive in all grades today, with at least three coins impounded in institutional collections at the Smithsonian and the American Numismatic Society.

The present coin is an attractive Choice proof, with the date slanting minutely up to the right and some diagnostic die polish at BERTY and the eye. The reverse is the die of 1881, lightly repolished. The design elements are sharply detailed throughout, and the deeply reflective fields provide intense cameo contrast with the frosty devices. The well-preserved greenish-gold surfaces show just a few minor hairlines and a small alloy spot after the date serves as a pedigree marker. Overall eye appeal is outstanding and this coin should find a home in a fine collection of proof gold. Census: 2 in 64 Ultra Cameo, 5 finer (4/15).
