Splendid, Rare PR65 Ultra Cameo
1882 $5 PR65 Ultra Cameo NGC. The mintage for the 1882 proof
half eagle is recorded as 48 pieces. That is merely a starting
point, however: Garrett and Guth today estimate that fewer than 20
separate specimens exist. At least three are in the museum
collections of the Smithsonian and the ANS.
1882 Five Dollar Gold
According to our auction records and considering the present piece we can account for only 13 examples, whether non-Cameo, Cameo, or Deep/Ultra Cameo, that have sold in the last 15 years. With the splendid Ultra Cameo contrast as here, only this piece and one other, a PR63 Deep Cameo PCGS example that appeared in our recent FUN Signature auction (2/2009, lot 2824), have traded during that time, to our knowledge. This Gem Ultra Cameo example offers profound cameo contrast over medium orange-gold surfaces. There is one faint, reddish alloy spot below star 11 that will serve as a pedigree identifier. Census: 4 in 65 Ultra Cameo, 2 finer (4/09).
