    Description

1883 Half Eagle, PR65 Ultra Cameo
    61 Pieces Struck, Ex: Trompeter

1883 $5 PR65 Ultra Cameo NGC. The 1883 proof Liberty half eagle claims a mintage of 61 pieces, a notable increase over the previous year, but still a tiny number in absolute terms. Forty examples were issued with the proof sets on February 10 and the rest were struck as individual pieces throughout the year. Unfortunately, the higher mintage just off-set a low survival rate for this issue, and the surviving population is not noticeably larger than those of previous years. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth note, "There are fewer than 20 coins traceable today, including those in museum collections." NGC and PCGS have certified a combined total of 17 examples, including an unknown number of resubmissions and crossovers (4/15).

This impressive Gem shows the diagnostic minute lumps in both loops of the second 8 and die polish between the top two arrow heads. The well-preserved orange-gold surfaces are free of mentionable distractions, but a tiny alloy spot near star 2 acts as a pedigree marker. The design elements are sharply detailed throughout and profound cameo contrast is evident between the deeply mirrored fields and the richly frosted devices. Eye appeal is terrific. Census: 1 in 65 Ultra Cameo, 3 finer (4/15).
