    1883 Half Eagle, PR66 Cameo
    Finest Cameo Example Certified

1883 $5 PR66 Cameo NGC. CAC. The comments of Walter Breen in his Proof Encyclopedia are worthy of quoting in full concerning the 1883 proof half eagle:

"Date slants crazily up to r., odd minute raised marks in both loops of second 8, left base of 1 r. of center. Rev. Tiny marks in second white stripe. Much rarer than lower denominations."

After citing a roster of nine examples, he finishes with:

"It is doubtful if as many as 20 survive."

PCGS' CoinFacts site posits a slightly larger number of survivors, perhaps 30 in all -- a figure that we believe to be on the high side, considering that NGC and PCGS combined have seen only 14 submissions in all grades, from an impaired PR55 NGC piece to a couple of PR67 Ultra Cameos at the same service. The average certified piece is a PR63 to PR64 example, with or without a Cameo designation.
The proof 1883 half eagle mintage was a smallish 61 pieces, lower than for any other gold denomination of the year except the eagle, made to the extent of only 40 coins.
The present Premium Gem proof Cameo example is one of the numerically finest at NGC, exceeded only by the aforementioned PR67 Ultra Cameos. There are no Cameos finer at either service (11/11). The surfaces on this coin are a beautiful yellow-gold, heavily mirrored and heavily frosted. The obverse is perfect as far as we can see, with the date "slightly" slanted to the right but the noted busyness inside the second 8. The reverse shows an interesting scribe line above TES OF AM and an area of swirling die polish below the eagle, both likely Mint-made. Census: 1 in 66 Cameo, 0 finer (11/11).(Registry values: P3) (NGC ID# 28CL, PCGS# 88478)
