Description

1884 Half Eagle, PR65 Ultra Cameo
    Ex: Garrett-Trompeter

1884 $5 PR65 Ultra Cameo NGC. CAC. Only 48 proof Liberty half eagles were struck in 1884, reversing the trend of increasing gold proof mintages that had prevailed throughout the decade. Of these, 30 were struck for inclusion in the gold proof sets on January 18, and the rest were struck in small scattered groups throughout the year. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth call this issue "very rare and somewhat overlooked ... very undervalued." Probably no more than 20 examples of the 1884 proof half eagle are extant, including three coins in institutional collections. The record price realized for the issue is $54,625 brought by the PR65 Ultra Cameo NGC coin in lot 1512 of the Phoenix Signature (Heritage, 3/2008).

This spectacular Gem shows the diagnostic heavy 1 in the date, with die polish at RT of LIBERTY and a die line tilted up from the base of the T. The reverse is the same die used in 1881-83. The design elements are sharply detailed, with a richly frosted texture that creates intense cameo contrast with the deeply mirrored fields. The pristine yellow-gold surfaces show a single mark in the left obverse field, below nose level. Overall visual appeal is outstanding. Census: 2 in 65 Ultra Cameo, 1 finer (4/15).
