Description

Undated New Haven 250th Anniversary Dollar Overstruck on an 1893 Silver Dollar AU 55. This fascinating piece leaves us with several unanswered questions. The obverse is that of the New Haven 250th Anniversary Dollar (HK-613), but the reverse is that of a Morgan dollar. The undertype can still be identified on the obverse with the hair, cap, and date the most readily discernible features. Beneath the main features, the reverse exhibits the partial impression of another Morgan dollar's reverse rotated 180 degrees. As the undertype is in raised relief, the reverse of this coin must have been struck over a negative impression of a Morgan dollar reverse.
As far as we can tell, someone obtained the obverse die of the New Haven 250th Anniversary Dollar that was originally issued in 1888. Sometime during or after 1893, the unknown party obtained one or more Morgan dollars and overstruck their obverses. The reverse "die" must have been just a blank piece of metal. The first coin(s) struck in this manner must have stamped the reverse impression into this piece of metal, with the result that the impression was weakly transferred to the present coin's reverse. This is speculative at best, and we stress that this coin's actual method of manufacture continues to elude us. An important piece that would offer hours of enjoyable study for an interested numismatist. (NGC ID# 37X8, PCGS# 98480)
