Description

1885 Half Eagle, PR64 Ultra Cameo
Stark Contrast, Orange-Peel Texture

1885 $5 PR64 Ultra Cameo NGC. JD-1, Low R.6. Only 66 proof half eagles were manufactured in 1885, plus 601,440 coins for circulation. Of that proof production, it is estimated that only 22 to 26 pieces may exist, according to John Dannreuther.

In addition to the stark contrast seen between the fields and devices, one of the first obvious qualities is the pronounced orange-peel texture of the fields. A small patch of hairlines in the left obverse field and a short contact mark on the chin of Liberty explain the grade. Census: 2 in 64 Ultra Cameo, 8 finer (11/21).
