    Description

    1886 Liberty Five, PR65 Cameo
    Ex: Kaufman-Trompeter

1886 $5 PR65 Cameo NGC. CAC. Ex: Trompeter. A nominal mintage of 72 proof Liberty half eagles was accomplished at the Philadelphia Mint in 1886, with 25 examples included in the proof sets issued in February and the rest struck at intervals throughout the year. The surviving population numbers no more than two dozen specimens in all grades, with some reported in impaired condition and at least three impounded in institutional collections.

The present coin is an impressive Gem that was preserved for many years in the collection of 19th century numismatist Nathan M. Kaufman. More recently, this piece was included in the fabulous collection of Ed Trompeter, who assembled the only complete set of proof half eagles from 1858 to 1907. The design elements are sharply detailed, with the date sloping up to the right and a diagnostic diagonal die line from the base of B in LIBERTY. The deeply mirrored fields provide noticeable cameo contrast with the frosty devices and the only mentionable flaw is a thin pinscratch in the left obverse field, before the mouth and chin. Eye appeal is outstanding. Census: 1 in 65 Cameo, 4 finer (4/15).
Ex: Nathan M. Kaufman; Louis G. Kaufman; N.M. Kaufman Collection (RARCOA, 8/1978), lot 850; Ed Trompeter Collection; Heritage Auctions, circa 1998; private collection.
