Deeply Mirrored 1887 Half Eagle, PR65
    Proof-Only Issue, 87 Minted

1887 $5 PR65 PCGS. The 1887 Liberty half eagle, a proof-only issue that had a mintage of just 87 coins, is a famous rarity in the series, a coin that enjoys extremely strong demand from a wide range of collectors and connoisseurs. Because of its proof-only status, the 1887 breaks from the numismatic tradition that suggests about half of the original mintage of 19th century gold coins survives today. Of course, every 1887 half eagle is identified as a proof, since there was no business strike production, so even circulated coins are known as impaired proofs. Several examples of this issue are known in the 45 to 58 grade range.
Certification data at PCGS and NGC shows a total of 30 examples that have been certified, undoubtedly including some resubmissions. Those totals include pieces that range from PR53 to PR65, including 16 Cameo examples and a single Ultra Cameo specimen. The average grade of all 30 certification events is just 62. Although the present example, certified in a green-label PCGS holder, is undesignated, a solid case can be built for a Cameo designation if resubmitted.
This Gem proof has lovely surfaces with deeply mirrored fields. The obverse is mostly light yellow with some splashes of deeper lemon, while the reverse is mostly lemon-yellow. The strike is bold and the devices exhibit strong frosty mint luster. This sensational example is destined for a top collection of proof gold. PCGS has only certified two in PR65, including this piece and a Cameo example (9/12).(Registry values: P5) (NGC ID# 28CR, PCGS# 8482)
