Description

Significant 1887 PR 64 Liberty Half Eagle

1887 $5 PR 64 PCGS. The 1887 half eagle carries added significance as the only date in the series among the 49 issues from 1859 forward that was struck only as a proof. A mere 87 pieces were originally produced and, of that number, perhaps 30 examples survive today. An unusually large percentage of these are impaired to some degree or circulated, shrinking the outstanding population of choice or better pieces to fewer than a dozen coins.
Light obverse hairlines can be seen on each side of the portrait and, while less obviously hairlined, two tiny contact marks are visible behind the eagle's head on the reverse. These are minor distractions to be sure, but great for pedigree purposes. An important five dollar proof that is a required addition for those specialists lucky enough to attempt a complete set of this lengthy and challenging gold series. Population: 5 in 64, 2 finer (2/00). (NGC ID# 28CR, PCGS# 8482)

    Weight: 8.36 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
