Description

    1889 Half Eagle, PR63 Cameo
    Rare in All Grades
Only 15 to 20 Examples Believed Known

1889 $5 PR63 Cameo PCGS. The 1889 proof half eagle is a low-mintage anomaly of the late 1880s; typical mintage figures for the period range from 72 to 95 pieces, yet the 1889 was struck to the limited extent of just 45 coins, likely a reflection of reduced collector demand during the year. The survival rate is even lower, with only 15 to 20 examples extant, per the research of Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth. The combined PCGS and NGC populations of 24 examples in all grades is likely inflated slightly by resubmissions, as two of the known survivors are raw in the Smithsonian Institution. The current offering is a sharply struck and deeply reflective Cameo, with warm honey-gold color and only minor hairlines to limit the grade. This is the first example of this proof issue we have offered at auction in four years. Population: 1 in 63 Cameo, 3 finer (12/14).(Registry values: P4) (NGC ID# 28CT, PCGS# 88484)

    Weight: 8.36 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper

The marketing was exceptional from the photos to the ads in Civil War Times and North South Trader for the cross over people!!! I have had many emails from my Civil War collecting fraternity that saw these and I saw them at the national show in Nashville/Franklin in early December.
