    Description

    1889 Liberty Five, PR64 Cameo
    Small Proof Mintage
    Ex: Trompeter-Eliasberg

1889 $5 PR64 Cameo NGC. CAC. Production of proof half eagles was sharply reduced in 1889, to a meager 45 pieces. David Akers notes the issue is "the rarest half eagle after 1884" and experts estimate the surviving population at just 15-20 examples in all grades. Three specimens are impounded in institutional collections, out of reach of present-day collectors. The 1889 is clearly a "sleeper" in today's market and seems undervalued compared to proof issues from surrounding years. The record price realized at auction for an 1889 proof half eagle is $32,200, brought by the PR65 Cameo NGC coin in lot 1513 of the Phoenix Signature (Heritage, 3/2008).

The present coin shows the diagnostic low date, slanting slightly up to the right. The design elements are sharply detailed throughout and the deeply reflective fields set off the frosty devices in a dramatic cameo effect. The well-preserved yellow-gold surfaces show just a few minor hairlines in the fields. This coin possesses a combination of illustrious pedigree, exceptional eye appeal, and absolute rarity that is second-to-none. The discerning collector will bid accordingly. Census: 8 in 64 Cameo, 4 finer (5/15).
