Awe-Inspiring and Rare 1889 Proof Half Eagle

1889 $5 PR 64 PCGS. While proof half eagles of the 1890s are legitimately rare coins, they are all somewhat more available than the 1889. In fact, the latter issue is the rarest proof half eagle from both the 1880s and the 1890s. Only 45 pieces were originally produced, of which fewer than 20 coins are believed extant. Both sides display uniform reflectivity, but Liberty's portrait reveals a thin blanket of mint frost at certain angles. The surfaces are exceptionally smooth (even for the near-Gem grade) and a small area of roughness in the planchet between stars 12 and 13 is the only noticeable pedigree marker. Orange-gold in color with eye appeal to spare.
From the Violet Bancroft Collection. (NGC ID# 28CT, PCGS# 8484)

    Weight: 8.36 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
