    Description

1891 Liberty Five, PR64 Ultra Cameo
    Ex: Norweb-Trompeter

1891 $5 PR64 Ultra Cameo NGC. CAC. Only 53 proof Liberty half eagles were struck in 1891, a sharp decrease from the year before. Although the mintage was smaller, the survival rate seems to have been slightly higher for this issue than for those of surrounding years. As a result, the 1891 has a surviving population of approximately 20-25 examples in all grades, about even with the other issues of the early 1890s. Three coins are impounded in institutional collections and auction appearances are infrequent.

This coin exhibits the only proof diagnostic mentioned by Walter Breen, attenuated tail feathers above the leaf. Unfortunately, some business-strike coins were apparently struck from this die, as well, so that is hardly definitive. Still, the coin offered here is a "no questions" proof, with sharply detailed design elements, broad rims, squared off edges, and deeply mirrored fields. The frosty devices contrast profoundly with the reflective fields to produce exceptional cameo contrast. Eye appeal is terrific. Census: 2 in 64 Ultra Cameo (1 in 64 Ultra Cameo), 9 finer (5/15).
