Description

Pittman's Choice 1894 Proof Half Eagle

1894 $5 PR 64 Cameo NGC. Only 75 proof 1894 half eagles were produced, the lowest mintage figure of the 1892-1907 era. There are neither distracting hairlines nor contact marks on either side of this originally preserved specimen. The shimmering fields form a nice backdrop to the frosty, crisply defined devices. The obverse is deeply colored in green-gold shades, but brighter reddish-gold tinting overlays the reverse. A small hairline in the right obverse field above star 13 is the only useful pedigree marker. One of only 25-30 proofs believed extant today, this coin would propel any collection of gold coinage to new levels of technical and aesthetic merit.
Ex: 1973 GENA Sale (Pine Tree, 9/73), lot 512, where it realized $1,050; John Jay Pittman Collection (Akers, 10/97), lot 1061, where it realized $14,300. (NGC ID# 28CY, PCGS# 88489)
