Description
1894 Half Eagle, PR64 Ultra Cameo
Underrated Proof Gold Rarity
Ex: Eliasberg-Trompeter
1894 $5 PR64 Ultra Cameo NGC. CAC. Ex: Trompeter. Despite
the relatively large reported mintage of 75 pieces, Walter Breen
believed the 1894 proof Liberty half eagle was the rarest issue of
the series after 1892. No more than 20-30 examples survive today in
all grades, including two coins in the National Numismatic
Collection at the Smithsonian Institution and another piece in the
collection of the American Numismatic Society. NGC and PCGS have
recorded a total of 50 submission events between them, but the
cluster of 21 submissions in PR64 grades suggests this total is
heavily inflated by resubmissions and crossovers (5/15).The present coin was once a highlight of the fabulous Eliasberg collection and was acquired by proof gold connoisseur Ed Trompeter when that prestigious gathering was sold. The date shows the diagnostic upward slant, with the 4 unusually close to the bust truncation. The 9 is closed and the crossbar of the 4 is notched. The design elements are well-detailed, with a richly frosted texture that contrasts profoundly with the deeply mirrored fields. Eye appeal is exceptional. Census: 4 in 64 Ultra Cameo (1 in 64+ Ultra Cameo), 5 finer (5/15).
Ex: Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr.; United States Gold Coin Collection (Bowers and Ruddy, 10/1982), lot 587; Ed Trompeter Collection; Heritage Auctions, circa 1998; private collection.
