Description
1895 Liberty Five, PR65 Cameo
81 Examples Struck, Ex: Trompeter
1895 $5 PR65 Cameo NGC. CAC. Ex: Trompeter. The mintage of
proof Liberty half eagles increased modestly in 1895, with 81
pieces struck. Unfortunately for present-day collectors, the
increased production total did not translate into a larger number
of coins available today. The 1895 seems to be just as rare as the
issues of previous years, with a surviving population of about
20-25 coins, including at least three specimens in institutional
collections. NGC and PCGS have combined to certify a total of 47
examples, but that figure is undoubtedly inflated by resubmissions
and crossovers (5/15).This delightful Gem features well-frosted design elements, with razor-sharp definition throughout. The date is placed slightly left of center, with the numerals widely spaced. The dies were apparently repolished later, as the Norweb specimen shows some slight loss of detail in the upper leaves of the olive branch, but this coin shows full details in that area. The deeply mirrored fields provide bold cameo contrast and the orange-gold surfaces show only a few minor hairlines. A planchet flake below 9 in the date acts as a pedigree marker. Eye appeal is outstanding. Census: 3 in 65 Cameo, 5 finer (5/15).
