Majestic Gem Cameo Proof 1895 Half Eagle

1895 $5 PR66 Cameo NGC. An exceptional Gem that exudes eye appeal for the well frosted devices which are wonderfully offset by the textbook orange peel mirror fields. Of paramount importance is the quality of the surfaces, for rarely are these delicate Proof gold coins found with such sterling quality. Most show significant hairlines or contact marks which are easily caused during all but the most careful examination. For identification there is a minute tick near Liberty's truncation above the 5 and a tiny planchet flake within Liberty's flowing curls on the back of her head. In terms of rarity, this is the finest graded by PCGS in the Cameo category, with a technically matching coin found their Deep Cameo category which may be the finest to survive. Toned with graceful orange-gold and yellow-gold hues over both sides.

Grover Cleveland was President in 1895, serving his second four year term which began in 1893. Interestingly, Cleveland was first elected to the White House in 1885, then lost his bid for reelection in 1889, this despite winning the popular vote, Benjamin Harrison won the electoral votes needed to edge Cleveland out. Cleveland regained the office of the Presidency after the four year break, and is the only President to have accomplished this feat. He was a true fiscal conservative and barred favors to any economic or political group. When Congress voted to appropriate $10,000 to distribute seed to drought-stricken farmers in Texas, Cleveland vetoed the bill. He wrote "Federal aid in such cases encourages the expectation of paternal care on the part of the Government and weakens the sturdiness of our national character..." Such views have apparently become less popular with most politicians these days.
