Description

1896 Liberty Half Eagle, PR64 Cameo
Dramatic Field/Device Contrast

1896 $5 JD-1, Low R.5, PR64 Cameo PCGS. CAC. The Philadelphia Mint struck a generous production of 103 proof Liberty half eagles in 1896, to accompany a small business-strike mintage of 58,960 pieces. A single pair of dies was used to strike all the proofs, with the date positioned lower than the date on the business-strikes, making it possible to distinguish between the formats. The proofs were well-produced and many examples show dramatic Cameo surfaces. This impressive Choice proof is a case in point, with sharply detailed, frosty design elements that contrast boldly with the deeply mirrored fields. The pleasing yellow-gold surfaces are well-preserved and eye appeal is outstanding. The high quality within the grade is confirmed by CAC. Population: 2 in 64 Cameo, 0 finer. CAC: 2 in 64, 1 finer (10/24).
