    Description

    1897 Half Eagle, Contrasted PR63
    An Infrequently Seen Issue

1897 $5 PR63 PCGS. The 1897 proof half eagle, with a reported mintage of 83 pieces, infrequently appears at auction. In fact, our Auction Archives shows only 21 appearances at the major auction companies since 1978. The numerical grades of these appearances range from PR50 to PR66, with near-Gem pieces being the most frequently occurring. By comparison, PCGS and NGC have graded 39 examples ranging from PR60 to PR67. The PCGS website estimates that 50 to 75 specimens are known.

The yellow-gold surfaces of the current Select offering display fairly strong field-motif contrast. Additionally, the design elements are sharply struck, enhancing the coin's overall eye appeal, and neither side reveals mentionable marks. This rare selection will generate spirited bidding. Who knows when another 1897 proof five will make an auction appearance? Housed in a prior generation green-label holder. Population: 3 in 63, 3 finer (4/14).(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 28D3, PCGS# 8492)

    Weight: 8.36 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
