Description

1897 Liberty Five, PR66 Cameo
Two Finer Coins at NGC, Ex: Trompeter

1897 $5 PR66 Cameo NGC. CAC. Ex: Trompeter. Mintage of proof half eagles declined somewhat in 1897, down to just 83 pieces after the high production total of 103 examples the year before. Despite the lower mintage, the 1897 proof half eagle is of about the same rarity as its 1896 counterpart, with a surviving population of approximately 25-30 examples in all grades. Several coins are impounded in institutional collections and a few more are in impaired condition.

Complete gold proof sets of 1897 began appearing at auction as early as the David S. Wilson Collection (S.H. Chapman, 3/1907), when the four-piece set in lot 357 was purchased by John Zug for $55. Prices for all proof gold coins are astronomically higher today and the current record price realized for an 1897 proof half eagle is $63,250, brought by the PR67 Ultra Cameo NGC specimen in lot 4918 of the FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2012).

This spectacular Premium Gem shows the date placed slightly low and to the left, with a closed 9 in the date and die polish in the stripes of the shield. The design elements are sharply defined in most areas, with just a touch of softness on the eagle's neck. The deeply reflective fields contrast boldly with the frosty devices and only a few faint hairlines can be detected, even on close inspection. This coin possesses remarkable eye appeal to complement its high technical grade. Census: 2 in 66 Cameo, 2 finer (5/15).
