Description

1898 Half Eagle, PR64+ Ultra Cameo
CAC-Approved and a Scarce Date

1898 $5 JD-1, R.5, PR64+ Ultra Cameo NGC. CAC. Deep black mirroring contrasts with yellow-gold surfaces and is strongest in the central fields, with interruptions around the design elements and in the instance of marks. Strike is immaculate, as is expected from a proof.

The later 1890s dates are popular with collectors, as they are among the more available dates, particularly in Deep Cameo. Mintages are consistently above at or above 75 coins after 1891, with the mintage equaling that number in 1894 and this year. From there, mintage peaks at 230 coins in 1900 and remains in the triple digits through 1905. The certified populations in Deep Cameo tell a somewhat different story. While the mintage of 1900 proof half eagles is just over three times that of 1898, the certified Deep Cameo proof population is the same (3/25). Therefore, these late 1890s dates are fertile ground for finding a Deep Cameo example, such as the present offering, while still obtaining an issue that is scarce overall.
