Exquisite PR65 Ultra Cameo 1898 Five

1898 $5 PR65 Ultra Cameo NGC. As the late 19th century progressed, the nature of American numismatics evolved, with greater sophistication and wealth appearing on the collecting scene with each passing year. One of the fields most affected by this advance was proof gold; previously, many years had had low mintages, but a number of later 19th century issues saw substantial increases in production, often to triple digits. The 1898 half eagle may be either a step back or a step forward, depending on one's interpretation. From Garrett and Guth, Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins:

"The mintage for the Proof 1898 half eagle drops somewhat from the mintages for the previous few years. The number of coins certified, however, is greater. This may be partially due to resubmissions, but the number of coins offered at auction is also higher. Surprisingly, the survival rate for the issue is quite high compared to most rare gold coins."

The numbers may be interpreted multiple ways; while the heightened availability combined with lowered mintage may be indicative of a high survival rate, it could also be that prior years' numbers were inflated, causing their survival rates to seem artificially low. Whatever the actual scenario, there is little doubt that the present Gem is among the most attractive examples imaginable. Exquisitely detailed central devices are richly frosted and sun-yellow, while the glassy fields bring new meaning to the phrase "black gold." Carefully preserved and delightful.
