Description

    Affordable 1898 Proof Half Eagle

1898 $5 PR62 PCGS. Formerly sold as lot 6410 in our 1997 National Money Sale, where it was described as, "Despite the relative availability of business strikes, proofs of this date are quite rare. Only 75 were originally produced, and of that number Breen estimates that today perhaps as few as 25 may still exist in all grades. This is a stunning, two-toned cameo. The fields go "black" and contrast heavily against the thick mint frost on the devices. Exceptional eye appeal, but unfortunately, the obverse fields show two severe abrasions at the forehead and behind the neck. Still, a stunning and rare coin that, despite its problems, is clearly superior for the grade." The coin brought $3,795 in that sale four years ago. (NGC ID# 28D4, PCGS# 8493)
