    Description

1900 Half Eagle, PR64 Ultra Cameo
    Ex: Trompeter

1900 $5 PR64 Ultra Cameo NGC. CAC. Ex: Trompeter. The 1900 Liberty half eagle claims the highest mintage of the series in proof format, with 230 pieces struck. The reason for this unprecedented production total is unknown, but collector demand never approached this level. As Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth note, "Many 1900 half eagles must have been destroyed as unsold." Today the issue is more available than the proofs of earlier years, but not as easy to locate as the mintage would suggest. The surviving population numbers approximately 75-100 examples in all grades, with several coins in institutional collections and out of reach of eager collectors.

Walter Breen identified two obverse proof dies for this issue, with one showing pronounced doubling on the stars. This coin represents the other variety, with perfect stars and the date positioned low. Minor repunching is evident inside the upper loop of the 9. The design elements are sharply detailed and richly frosted, creating intense cameo contrast with the deeply reflective fields. The pleasing orange-gold surfaces show one useful pedigree marker, a vertical dig between the bases of 9 and 0 in the date. Eye appeal is outstanding. Census: 3 in 64 Ultra Cameo, 13 finer (5/15).
