1901 Half Eagle, PR65 Cameo
Few Cameo Proofs at Either Service
1901 $5 JD-1, R.4, PR65 Cameo NGC. John Dannreuther
correctly points out "Collectors buy the frosted Proofs before they
will buy an issue of similar rarity lacking frost or missing
detail. Full strike, full detail, full frost, and deeply reflective
fields on Proofs are the traits that make them bring extraordinary
prices ..." This 1901 proof half eagle checks all the boxes. A
needle-sharp strike and smooth, mirrorlike fields accompany frosted
motifs on this MS65 Cameo proof. Dazzling orange-gold color adds to
the exceptional eye appeal. While the mint frost is not as
pronounced as on earlier Cameo proofs, any 1901 proof with
designated Cameo contrast is a prize for the specialist. NGC
