Description

1901 Half Eagle, PR66 Cameo
Finest Cameo at Either Service

1901 $5 JD-1, R.4, PR66 Cameo PCGS. Honey-gold surfaces contrast with deeply-mirrored, abrasion free fields. This is a late die state example, with lapping reducing the relief around LIBERTY on the obverse and the scroll over WE on the reverse, causing these areas to be polished instead of frosted.

However, the Cameo effect on this example is still quite desirable, not to mention scarce. This is the last year that the collector can reasonably expect to obtain a proof gold coin with any level of Cameo contrast. Only a handful of Deep or Ultra Cameo examples exist from 1902 through 1907, and Cameo examples decline from about one-third of certifications for 1900 and 1901 to less than a quarter for 1902 and 1903. Furthermore, this is the finest certified Cameo example from either service, making this the pinnacle of quality among Cameo coins.
